There’s so much misinformation about what’s true and what’s false about fluoride. While some people think it doesn’t have a positive impact on their tooth health, others still see it as a conspiracy theory!
All of that just isn’t true. The fact of the matter is, fluoride does an excellent job of preventing cavities in your teeth. This is because fluoride helps your teeth restore the microscopic minerals necessary for having health enamel.
Established research has found that increased fluoride exposure helps restore a microscopic amount of minerals to your tooth enamel. This process is known as remineralization. It strengthens your tooth enamel and reduces your chances of developing tooth decay and sensitivity problems.
If you’ve had issues with cavities and tooth sensitivity, your Shaia Dental Care dentist might recommend a basic fluoride treatment. This is usually administered at the end of your dental checkup.
The treatment will come in the form of a foam, gel or varnish. After your treatment, you should avoid eating or drinking to allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate into your tooth’s enamel.
It’s also a good idea to brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste that has added fluoride. In some cases, our Shaia Dental Care team might also prescribe daily fluoride supplements.
Fluoride treatment may not be for you if you’re good at taking care of your oral health and avoiding foods that destroy your enamel. Consulting with your dentist is the best way to determine whether or not you need fluoride treatment. You can call us today to schedule an appointment.
