What is an oral cancer screening?
An oral cancer screening is the process we use to check for signs of oral cancer. Routine oral cancer screenings can ensure that oral cancer is detected as soon as possible. The earlier it is detected and diagnosed, the more effectively oral cancer can be treated. Dr. Anthony Shaia provides screenings for oral cancer in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, during your regular dental exams and cleanings.
Do I need an oral cancer screening?
We recommend that you visit our dentist at Shaia Dental Care every six months for a regular dental exam and cleaning. We will perform an oral cancer screening as part of your exam.
Am I at risk for oral cancer?
Men are typically more likely to suffer from oral cancer than women. Men who are over the age of 50 are at the greatest risk. The risk factors for oral cancer include:
- Tobacco use – both smoking and smokeless tobacco use greatly increase your chances of developing oral cancer
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Excessive exposure to the sun, especially at a young age
- Family history of cancer
