At Shaia Dental Care in Parma Heights, Ohio, Dr. Anthony Shaia and his team are delighted to offer our patients composite resin dental fillings, a long-lasting, tooth-colored material to repair minor to moderate damage in a tooth. Once a tooth has been filled, it may take a few hours to a few days for tooth sensitivity to diminish, and we want to share with you some things you can do to help your tooth adjust to the filling during this time.
What You Should Avoid
— Biting down hard can make the tooth sore where the new filling was placed. It can help to chew on the other side of the mouth from the new filling, and chew carefully in the beginning. You will definitely want to avoid biting down all the way until the anesthesia wears off, so as not to accidentally bite your tongue, cheek or lip while the area is still numb.
— Chewing with your mouth open will cause tooth sensitivity as the cold air touches the newly filled tooth. You will also want to avoid hot or cold drinks that might increase this sensitivity.
— Avoiding sticky and hard foods in the first few days after your filling will also help. This means holding off on consuming things like nuts, hard candy, granola bars, and raw carrots, as well as sugary, sticky foods.
